Equality, Dignity, and Justice for Every Roma Voice

Our History, Our Voice: The Roma Journey

Who Are the Roma?

The Roma are the largest ethnic minority group in Europe. In the UK, many Roma have moved from countries such as Romania, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, and parts of the former Yugoslavia.

Roma people are sometimes grouped together with English Gypsies and Irish Travellers. While there are shared experiences, Roma communities often face their own distinct challenges—particularly around migration, discrimination, and access to support.

Where Do the Roma Come From?

The Roma originally come from the Punjab and Rajasthan regions in northern India. Their ancestors began migrating over 1,000 years ago, travelling through the Middle East before eventually settling across Europe and beyond.

For many generations, Roma communities lived a nomadic lifestyle. However, during the communist era in Eastern Europe, governments enforced policies that forced many Roma to settle permanently, disrupting traditional ways of life.

A History of Discrimination

Roma people have experienced discrimination for centuries. Across Europe, many have been excluded from employment, education, healthcare, and housing—and these inequalities continue to this day.

One of the darkest periods in Roma history occurred during the Second World War. In Romania and other countries, many Roma were deported under racist policies. They were targeted as “undesirable”, and thousands died from hunger, illness, and harsh conditions. Tragically, it took many years before these atrocities were officially recognised or widely acknowledged.

Roma in the UK

The Roma are Europe’s largest ethnic minority, with around 12 million people, mostly in Eastern Europe. Many live in poverty and face ongoing discrimination and exclusion.

Today, it is estimated that the UK has one of the largest Roma populations in Western Europe.
The biggest Roma communities are found in Luton, Ipswich, Peterborough, and Southend-on-Sea, with most people coming from Romania.

Despite challenges, Roma families in the UK are working hard to build better lives, access education, and become part of the wider society. Ongoing support, inclusion, and respect are essential for a brighter future.
